How your business can show up in AI answers

How a small business in Kuwait can appear in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers: consistent facts, a bilingual profile, a FAQ, structured data and open crawlers.

In short

AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity build their answers from what they can read on the web: your website, your map listings, your reviews and other sites that mention you. Make your facts easy to find and the same everywhere, in Arabic and English, let the search crawlers behind these answers read your site, and skip the tricks.

More and more customers ask an assistant instead of typing a search: "where can I get a birthday cake delivered in Salmiya tonight?" or "وين أحصل صالون رجالي مفتوح الحين في حولي؟". The assistant answers in a few sentences and often names the businesses it found, with links. You cannot buy your way into those sentences, and nobody can promise you a place in them. What you can do is make your business easy for an assistant to find, read and trust.

This is sometimes called GEO, generative engine optimisation. In practice it is mostly good local SEO done carefully, plus a few steps specific to AI tools.

How AI assistants find businesses

There are two ways an assistant knows about you:

  • It searches the web while answering. ChatGPT's search, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews look up pages for the question, then summarise what they found and cite sources. This is the part you can influence, because it reads your current website and listings.
  • It remembers from its training. A model learns from a large snapshot of the web, months old. That memory is no place for your hours or prices, which is why the search part matters more for a local business.

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in its AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page that is indexed and eligible to appear in search with a snippet can be used (AI features and your website). In other words, the basics of search come first.

Step 1: A complete Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is one of the sources assistants and maps rely on most for local questions. Complete every part: the right category, address and map pin, phone, opening hours with special hours for Ramadan and holidays, photos, and your website link. Reply to reviews in the language they were written in. Google's own guidance on local ranking applies here too: relevance, distance and how well known you are.

Step 2: The same name, address and phone everywhere

Assistants compare sources. When your website, Google, Apple Maps, Instagram bio, delivery apps and directories all show the same name, address and phone number, they can be sure it is one business. When they disagree, an assistant may skip you or repeat the wrong detail. Settle on one exact version of each in Arabic and in English, and paste it rather than retyping.

Step 3: A page that answers questions

Assistants quote sentences that answer a question on their own. Give them some:

  • Keep a FAQ page with the questions customers really ask: prices, areas you deliver to, how to book, parking, whether you take KNET.
  • Start each answer with the answer itself, then the detail: "Yes, we deliver to all areas of Hawalli governorate; delivery is 1.000 KWD."
  • Write facts as text, not inside images or flyers: hours, prices, address, services.
  • Do it in both languages. A question asked in Arabic is best answered from an Arabic page.

Step 4: Structured data and llms.txt

Structured data labels your facts for machines: business name, address, opening hours, phone, price range. Google documents how to describe a shop or clinic as a LocalBusiness, and FAQ markup can label your questions and answers.

llms.txt is a proposal from 2024 for a plain text file at your site's root that summarises the site for AI tools, with links to its most useful pages. Not every assistant reads it yet, but it is simple to add and costs nothing.

Step 5: Let the right crawlers in

Your site's robots.txt file tells crawlers what they may read. AI companies run separate crawlers for separate jobs, and they document them:

Blocking the search crawlers can keep you out of answers. Blocking training crawlers is a separate choice, and it does not stop your site from being cited by search. Check also that your hosting or security settings do not block AI crawlers by default without telling you.

Step 6: Be mentioned elsewhere

Assistants trust a business more when other sources mention it: local directories, your industry association, press coverage, event listings, partners and suppliers. Real reviews on your map listings count too. A mention on a respected local site is worth more than many on sites nobody reads.

What not to do

  • No keyword stuffing, hidden text or invented reviews. Search engines treat them as spam, and assistants read the same pages.
  • No near-identical pages for every area of Kuwait. One good page per service, and per area you truly serve, is enough.
  • No pages written only to please a machine. If a customer would not find a page useful, an assistant is unlikely to quote it.

How to check where you stand

Once a month, ask two or three assistants the questions your customers would ask, in Arabic and in English: "best place to buy abayas in Salmiya", "عيادة أسنان في الجابرية تقبل المواعيد يوم الجمعة". Look at who they name and which sources they cite. If a detail about you is wrong, fix it at the source they used: your website, your Google profile or a directory.

How darwaza sites are set up for AI answers

darwaza builds the software businesses in Kuwait and the Gulf run on, and every site has the technical basics in place: titles and descriptions in both languages, a sitemap, structured data and an llms.txt file, and AI crawlers are allowed to read it. Your address, phone, opening hours and social links appear on every page, and you edit the search text and the questions of each language in the admin.

darwaza does not manage your Google or Apple listings or your reviews, and nobody can promise you a place in an AI answer. For a site that gives assistants clear facts to work with, you can start free.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or Gemini answers?

Not in the answers themselves. Some assistants show separate ads that are labelled as ads, but the answer is built from what the assistant can read about you on the web. Complete listings, consistent facts and a clear website are what get you named.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

Decide crawler by crawler. Search crawlers such as OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot let assistants find and link your site, and blocking them can keep you out of answers. Training crawlers such as GPTBot are separate; blocking them does not stop search crawlers from citing you.

What is llms.txt, and do I need one?

It is a proposal from 2024 for a plain text file that summarises a website for AI tools, with links to its most useful pages. Not every assistant reads it yet, so it is a bonus rather than a requirement, but it is cheap to add and harmless.

How long until AI assistants know about my business?

There is no fixed timeline. Assistants that search the web can find a new site once search engines and their crawlers have read it, which can take days or weeks. Keep your facts consistent everywhere and check monthly by asking the questions your customers would ask.
